Anti-Counterfeiting

With the modern convenience of high-quality color printers comes the opportunity to easily print counterfeit packaging and labels. Pop! technology has a new smart packaging solution which helps you to detect counterfeit packaging and deter barcode switching.

Retail Crime

As reported regularly by the press, barcode switching has become the fastest growing retail crime in the world. Organized crime has taken notice. In late 2010, an organized crime family was convicted of multiple fraud changes to include counterfeit barcode switching on five chains: Best Buy, Circuit City, Home Depot, Target and Wal-mart. They are not stopping at switching barcodes. They are also switching barcodes on coupons and gift cards. Goods are no longer falling off the truck, they are walking out your front door with a receipt attached. There are few technologies today to address this risk so it is very difficult to tell if you have trouble on the storefront.

Pop! iCon addresses this growing threat with a new patented packaging and barcode labeling system. Using only your current scanning systems and hardware, you can automatically detect fake barcodes at the point of scan. There are no downstream costs and no new equipment to buy.

Take a look at the iCon barcode below. This is an image of an actual iCon barcode label. The security features are undetectable to thieves. Give us a call and let us take you through a demonstration.
Counterfeit Detection

Depending on the data source, counterfeit medication has either the first or second largest market share in the world. The reasons are simple: there is a demand for inexpensive drugs, they are difficult to detect, and the penalties are minimal. Combating drugs is not so simple. Short of expert training, it is difficult, if not impossible for physicians and pharmacists to detect counterfeits.

In the same way we address fake barcodes, we can use your point-of-sale system to detect counterfeit drug packaging. Using even more sophisticated design we can use serialized coding to match the package to its contents. All of this done at the point of receiving and the point of sale. There are no downstream costs to distributors, retailers or consumers. As an alternate to ePedigree or an enhancement to your pedigree program, ask how the Pop iCon can detect counterfeits.

Pop! iCon is also an excellent solution for counterfeit luxury goods, liquor, parts, cigarettes, compact disks, or DVDs.

Quality Control

You can turn your cold chain excellence into improved margins and have consumers switching to your brand.

Studies tell us consumers are willing to pay more and willing to switch to brands which display a Time-Temperature Indicator (TTI).

The problem with traditional TTIs is multiple: they have limited use for anyone with color blindness, they require training, they are ignored by retail cashiers, they are not tied to automated safety monitoring systems, they are not "green", and consumers find them confusing.

Pop! Technology brings an end to TTI headaches. Pop! Technology's Sability line of products incorporates thermochromic ink right into your barcode. These patented thermochromic barcodes can be applied to your existing UPC or used in other barcode symbologies. Sability is two barcodes nestled into the footprint of a single barcode.

Take a demo. These are images from an actual production line. If you look closely at the BeeTagg barcode you can see slight differences in the barcodes. Download the BeeTagg app from your app store or go to the BeeTagg website.
In an actual supply chain, you would only see one barcode and the barcode would irreversibly change when a set condition is exceeded. It is helpful to see this in action. Check out the animation at the top of the screen or see a short YouTube video demonstration on our Media page. Call us for samples of these actual BeeTagg labels.

The Sability line of products provides unique advantages over traditional visual labels:
  • Integrates with existing scanning systems. There are no hardware or software upgrades.
  • Doesn't rely on human inspection so fully automates food safety.
  • Is cost-effective at the unit level.
  • Allows consumers to use their mobile phone barcode scanners to check the quality of their products before consumption.
  • Works with multiple barcode symbologies.
The Sability line is an elegant labeling solution for:
  • Perishable edibles
  • Temperature-controlled medications
  • Medical devices
  • Consumer electronics
  • Floral
  • Parcel Service deliveries
Inks are available in any temperature you require with a sensitivity of plus or minus 1°C. These can be printed directly to your existing packaging or applied as a label to the package.

Point-of-Purchase

The advances in supply chain management, the initiatives of Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) and category management, and the investments in inventory-tracking technology have not - by and large - reduced the overall level of out-of-stocks [OOS] on store shelves from what was reported in previous studies.
- Food Marketing Institute, Retail Out of Stocks, Executive Summary
The report goes on to list one of the key reasons for OOS's is the store has inventory, but the shelf was empty. Other key reasons: inadequate orders and poor shelf planning. The central problem for many sections is the item has multiple locations in the store, but only one inventory number. So, we are left to "guestimate" what percent of the sales should go into the plan-o-gram; tickle our forecasting models; and then simply live with out-of-stocks which typically costs retailers 4% of sales.

Pop! Technology solves this problem with our Ular line of thermochromic barcodes. If you have dual location which include cold space, our active thermochromic barcode can report which point-of-purchase (POP) the consumer selected the product. How does it do this? Ular is two barcodes nestled into the footprint of a single barcode.

Ular then automatically alters the reporting UPC based on what location the consumer selected their purchase. There is no change to any hardware or software anywhere in the supply chain. Simply update the parent UPC with the child "Sold Cold" UPC in your item file.

It is helpful to see this action. Check out the animation at the top of the screen or see a short YouTube video demonstration on our Media page.

Ular provides key benefits to retailers and CPG manufacturers:
  • Provides an accurate count of POP inventory so eliminates manual checks and counts
  • Allows supply chain software to notify of an OOS when the store still has inventory
  • Provides accurate plan-o-gram data
  • Provides accurate OOS alerts to warehouse and distributors
  • Reduces OOS, returning 4% of sales back to the retailer's bottom line
  • Provides manufacturers with real inventory numbers to sell into the cold box
  • Prevents brand switching
We took a look at the sales data from 150 varieties of wine in a cold box, all with the Pop! Ular label:
  • The best performing cold box sets, using every retail measure, were the smallest - including total units, total sales, units of 1.75L.
  • For some wineries, the best place to sell chillable wine was the warm space. However, this also varies significantly from store to store.
  • The stores with the most elite demographics had the lowest chilled sales, and the largest cold boxes.
  • During summer holidays, cold box sales chilled as consumers stocked up from the shelf.
  • The cooler commands an average $1.00 per unit more than the shelf.
  • The $6.00 to $8.00 price segment drives over half of all cold box sales.
Give us a call to ask for samples. Ular can be printed directly to your existing label or placed on package labels using pre-printed thermochromic Ular barcode labels.

Watch for an upcoming version of Pop! Ular that will report point-of-purchase information for products with multiple locations including comparing warm shelf with end caps and shipper volume. Prove how well your end-caps are really doing!
